Second Degree

Opening Ceremony of the Second Degree

It is sometimes interesting to change the energy of the place in which you work to practice esoteric techniques of the second degree. It is necessary for that to use the following sequence, associated with the opening ceremony of the first degree of Apprentice.

Before starting the sequence, you should add extra candles. Place five candles around the sacred book as if located at the five corners of a pentagram.

After placing these extra candles, breathe in silence for a moment and then say:

A Fellowcraft is symbolically five years old.

With full knowledge of the letter G, the Egyptian Freemasons of which I am a member traditionally begin their work at noon, when the light shines at the zenith of the Temple. As the Master Hermes says, “It is from the Light and Life that Humans were born.”

Breathe deeply one time and say:

This is from the east that light is coming and this is where the origin of our tradition can be found.

May the light of this degree shine once again!

Light the incense, arrange the tools on the sacred book according to the intertwining of the second degree, and meditate for a few moments. Then say:

May the power of the four elements—earth, water, air, and fire—that compose my body be now invoked.

Light the first candle placed at the top of your sacred book. You will progressively follow the sequence as mentioned in the following invocations.

While lighting this first candle, say:

From the realm of Ether, I invoke the power of Jupiter!

Light the second candle, placed at the southwest point of the pentalpha.

From the realm of fire, I invoke the power of Mars!

Light the third candle, placed at the northeast point of the pentalpha.

From the realm of air, I invoke the power of Mercury!

Light the fourth candle, placed at the southeast point of the pentalpha.

From the realm of water, I invoke the power of Venus!

Light the fifth candle, placed at the northwest point of the pentalpha.

From the realm of earth, I invoke the power of Saturn!

Raise your hands to the sky, palms up, and say:

I invoke the powers within me!

Take your sword and draw in the direction of the east a pentagram on a vertical plane. You should start from the upper angle and continue to draw it clockwise.

Then replace the sword and knock five times in the following sequence: 2–1–1–1

(2 knocks, pause, 1 knock, pause, etc.).

Stand up, put your right hand on your heart, and say:

To the Glory of the Supreme Architect of the Worlds, to the glory of the gods and goddesses of the sacred land of Egypt, by the divine powers that are part of every human being, I declare open this ceremony working at the second degree of the Masonic order!

Now you can proceed to your work in the second degree.

Closing Ceremony of the Second Degree

When your work to the second degree has ended and prior to performing the full closing ceremony of the first degree, you should proceed as follows.

Stand in front of your altar, and after a moment of silence, say:

It’s midnight.
